Balearic Islands agricultural law faces local demands
Farmers and local authorities in the Balearic Islands are responding to a proposed new agricultural law currently under review by the Parlament. In Ibiza, agricultural sectors support a provision that would link the construction of new housing on rural land to a commitment to maintain farming activities for at least 15 years. This measure aims to prevent land abandonment and curb the proliferation of rural housing by requiring developers to justify productive land use.
In Formentera, the Consell de Formentera is advocating for the law to recognize the specific traditions and unique needs of the island. Representatives have requested the legal recognition of traditional land management practices, such as 'explotación a mayoral', and the protection of local customs as cultural heritage. Additionally, the council is seeking specific regulations regarding water usage, the use of regenerated water for irrigation, and the legal harvesting of wild products and coastal materials like posidonia.
