Balearic Islands approves new agrarian law and Menorca development projects

The Government of the Balearic Islands has approved a new agrarian law designed to protect rural land and ensure the economic viability of the agricultural sector. Key measures include prioritizing water access for the agricultural sector once population needs are met, facilitating direct sales, and linking new housing on rural land to the maintenance of active farming. The law also regulates agro-stays and promotes local products in public procurement, such as school cafeterias.

In Menorca, the regional government has also advanced several strategic educational projects, including the creation of a new Professional Conservatory of Music and Dance in Mahón, a new Vocational Training Center in Es Castell, and the expansion of the University Seat in Alaior. Additionally, 2 million euros have been allocated to establish climate shelters on the island in response to adverse weather events.

Separately, the Consell de Menorca is promoting a strategic agreement for the 2027-2032 period. President Adolfo Vilafranca is seeking a ‘pact of the insular state’ to define a sustainable and balanced socioeconomic model for the island through political consensus.
