Balearic Islands face rising migration pressure and minor guardianship challenges
The Balearic Islands are experiencing a significant increase in irregular migration. Minister of Transport Óscar Puente acknowledged a notable rise in small boat arrivals compared to the summer of 2025, prompting promises of increased operational capacity for Salvamento Marítimo to manage humanitarian emergencies.
Recent arrivals include a group of 26 migrants—comprising 20 men and six women—who landed at a crowded beach in Cala Santanyí, Mallorca. This event was part of a larger wave of arrivals across Mallorca, Cabrera, and Formentera.
The regional government is also facing challenges regarding migrant minors. Currently, the Balearic Government provides guardianship to 916 unaccompanied foreign minors. In Eivissa, these minors now constitute 60% of those under local guardianship. Due to the high number of minors exceeding the established capacity of 434 places, the Balearic Government has authorized a legal appeal to the Supreme Court against the royal decree regulating the capacity of minor protection centers.
