Balearic Islands bans energy drink sales to minors

The Balearic Islands government has approved a decree-law to prohibit the sale and supply of energy drinks to minors under the age of 18. The regulation also restricts the sale, distribution, and advertising of nitrous oxide when intended for recreational inhalation.

This decision follows data from the 2023 ESTUDES survey, which indicated that 47.7% of students aged 14 to 18 had consumed energy drinks in the previous month. The measure aims to address public health concerns, as high caffeine intake is linked to risks such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular issues. Additionally, the government noted that mixing these drinks with alcohol can mask the perception of intoxication, leading to increased risky behavior.

The new rules apply to all commercial establishments in the archipelago, including supermarkets, convenience stores, and vending machines. Energy drinks are defined as non-alcoholic refreshments containing 15 mg of caffeine or more per 100 ml. Violations of these regulations may result in significant fines.
