Balearic Islands coastal cleanup removes over 5.3 tonnes of waste

Coastal cleaning services in the Balearic Islands removed more than 5.3 tonnes of waste from the archipelago's waters and coasts during September. According to data from the Department of the Sea and the Water Cycle, the daily average collection amounted to approximately 178 kilograms.

Mallorca accounted for nearly half of the total material collected, with 2.5 tonnes, followed by Ibiza with 2 tonnes. Menorca and Formentera recorded collections of 408 kilograms and 405 kilograms, respectively. Plastics were the most prevalent type of waste, representing 44.2% of the total at 2.3 tonnes. Wood was the second most common material, totaling 1.4 tonnes.

The operation utilized 23 vessels, including 15 dedicated to beach areas and eight for coastal zones. Beyond routine collection, teams responded to several incidents, including drifting vessels and the removal of large debris such as construction tanks and pallets. Additionally, an increase in jellyfish presence was noted in bathing areas during the month.
