Balearic Islands conclude high-risk forest fire season

The high-risk period for forest fires in the Balearic Islands has concluded, marking the end of strict burning restrictions that were in place from May 1 to October 15. During this period, burning was prohibited within 50 meters of forest land and in all recreational areas, while agricultural burning within 500 meters of forests required administrative authorization.

Despite the end of these specific seasonal restrictions, authorities emphasize that fire risk persists year-round. Residents are advised to check the daily 'Alerta Foc' (Fire Alert) map published by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Natural Environment, which rates risk levels from 1 to 4. At level 4, all burning is prohibited.

The recent season saw a significant reduction in wildfire damage, with only 32 hectares affected across 72 incidents. This figure represents approximately 4.7% of the average seen over the last two decades. This outcome is attributed to professional intervention by Ibanat and environmental agents, proactive forest cleaning, and immediate response doctrines, though officials warn that over 90% of fires are still caused by human negligence.
