Balearic Islands face economic growth without improved resident wellbeing

The Balearic Islands are experiencing a disconnect between economic growth and the quality of life for residents. While the region's real GDP increased by 46.5% between 2001 and 2025—outpacing the Spanish national average of 44.4%—the population grew by approximately 50%, preventing a rise in per capita wealth.

Since 2011, the real GDP per capita in the Balearic Islands has declined by 2.3%, whereas the figure for Spain has increased by 19.2%. Regional officials have acknowledged this “illness,” noting that the current economic model struggles to transform high activity and employment records into tangible prosperity for locals.

Challenges include intense tourism pressure, particularly in Menorca, where daily human presence reaches an average of 203,000 people. Critics point to the expansion of tourist infrastructure and the lack of industrial weight as factors contributing to an economy that relies heavily on seasonal activity and faces rising costs and environmental pressures.
