Balearic Islands hit by mini tsunamis causing coastal flooding

The Balearic Islands have experienced sudden sea-level fluctuations, known locally as ‘rissagues’ or mini tsunamis, causing flooding across several islands. In Ibiza, the surge hit Platja de s’Arenal in Sant Antoni de Portmany, sweeping seawater across streets and restaurants. The flooding destroyed equipment, including containers, coolers, and bar supplies, and surrounded a stage prepared for a tribute concert. Consequently, the San Antonio Town Hall cancelled the scheduled 10pm performance ‘for security reasons.’

In Mallorca, the phenomenon affected the ports of Alcudia, Andratx, and Soller, as well as Port Adriano in Calvia. In Puerto Alcudia, seawater flooded sections of the beachfront promenade. Menorca also faced warnings, with Ciutadella placed on standby due to predicted sea-level oscillations of up to four feet (1.2 metres).

These mini tsunamis are caused by sudden changes in atmospheric pressure rather than seismic activity. While the surges caused significant disruption to coastal infrastructure and tourism activities, no immediate injuries were reported.
