Balearic Islands human pressure reaches 1.93 million people

The Human Pressure Indicator (IPH) in the Balearic Islands reached a peak of over 1.93 million people in June, marking an increase of approximately 1.4% or 28,000 more people compared to June 2025. On average, the archipelago maintained around 1.89 million inhabitants during the month.

Regional breakdowns show varying levels of pressure. Mallorca averaged over 1.39 million people, while Menorca saw a 2.6% increase to approximately 180,000. Ibiza averaged 285,000 inhabitants, and Formentera experienced a 6.6% increase, reaching an average of nearly 29,000 people.

Experts suggest that the primary challenge for the Balearic tourism model is not the total annual number of tourists, but the temporal concentration of people. High seasonal peaks put significant strain on public services, including healthcare, public transport, water networks, and waste management. Other pressures include the conversion of residential properties into vacation rentals and the occupation of public spaces. To address these issues, recommendations include using real-time human presence data to fund services and regulating the real estate market to protect long-term housing for local residents.
