Balearic Islands launches research for climate-resilient carob trees

The Balearic Islands' Institute for Research and Training in Agri-food and Fisheries (IRFAP) has launched a pioneering research project to develop carob trees better adapted to climate change. The study, conducted at the Sa Granja experimental farm, focuses on evaluating two selected clonal rootstocks produced via in vitro techniques.

These clonal rootstocks will be compared against the traditional seed-based system to determine which provides better resistance to increasing temperatures, drought, and extreme weather events. Researchers will analyze tree vigor, productivity, uniformity, and compatibility with different varieties over several years.

Joan Simonet, the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Natural Resources, emphasized that the initiative aims to use science and experimentation to anticipate agricultural challenges rather than reacting to them after they occur. The goal is to translate this research into practical solutions for local farmers.
