Balearic Islands leaders clash over tourism and airport management

Tensions are rising in the Balearic Islands over how to manage tourism growth and infrastructure. Spanish Transport Minister Oscar Puente has defended airport planning documents for Palma, Ibiza, and Menorca, stating that the figures are merely forecasts based on market dynamics rather than fixed limits on passenger numbers. Puente argued that regional authorities are responsible for increasing tourist capacity and prioritizing tourist housing over residential needs.

Local political figures have criticized the approach. The Partido Popular (PP) accused the minister of belittling the islands' demands, while members of the PSIB-PSOE have criticized the behavior of the airport authority, Aena, describing its focus on short-term profit as detrimental to the community.

Gabriel Escarrer, CEO of Meliá Hotels International, has also weighed in, arguing that tourism is being used as a “scapegoat” for broader infrastructure deficiencies. Escarrer noted that while the resident population has grown by 30% and tourist arrivals by 60% over two decades, hotel capacity has only increased by 4.3%. He attributed much of the pressure to the proliferation of unlicensed holiday rentals and called for better regulation of the rental sector and increased investment in public infrastructure to manage the region's success.
