Balearic Islands police conduct under scrutiny after July 26 protest

The Balearic Government said there may be specific cases of police excesses during the July 26 demonstration in Palma and will wait for the conclusions of an internal investigation before issuing any judgment. Despite this, the government reiterated its confidence in the National Police and the Civil Guard.

The Illes Balears Bar Association’s Human Rights Commission condemned the police action as unnecessary, arbitrary and disproportionate, describing indiscriminate baton use against peaceful demonstrators and a photojournalist, and called for an independent judicial investigation. The commission noted that the incident left about twenty people injured.

Police investigators attributed the escalation of the protest to activist Margalida Ramis, whose megaphone announcement allegedly triggered a riot when the crowd‑control limit of 1,500 persons was reached, prompting officers to block further access.
