Balearic Islands proposes VAT elimination on essential goods

Marga Prohens, President of the Balearic Islands, has proposed eliminating VAT on essential food products and basic goods until the end of the year to mitigate the impact of inflation. The measure aims to provide direct relief to families, particularly those with lower incomes, and to support small businesses and the self-employed.

The proposal highlights the unique economic challenges of the archipelago, where high maritime and air transport costs exacerbate price increases compared to mainland Spain. Proponents argue that reducing tax pressure on necessities and fuel will act as a temporary counterweight to the loss of purchasing power and the structural costs associated with insularity.
