Balearic Islands school infrastructure projects face delays and repairs

Infrastructure projects for educational facilities in the Balearic Islands face varying timelines due to structural damage and weather-related issues.

In Ciutadella, the reconstruction of the Poliesportiu Sant Joan, located near the IES Maria Àngels Cardona, has been delayed. Originally expected to be completed by late 2026 or early 2027, the project requires new structural calculations. Authorities discovered that the metal structure intended for reuse was in poor condition and could not be safely utilized. This delay follows a storm four years ago that damaged the roof; the subsequent lack of immediate repairs led to further deterioration of the facility's interior. The project involves an investment of 2.1 million euros.

Meanwhile, in Porto Cristo, work has begun to repair the skylight at the Mitjà de Mar school. The skylight was damaged by high winds in October of last year. The repair process is expected to last approximately two months. Additionally, the Conselleria d’Educació has replaced the school's emergency staircase following maintenance concerns raised by the community.
