Balearic Islands face rise in pseudotherapies among medical professionals

The Balearic Islands have become a significant hub for the proliferation of pseudotherapies, a trend that has been growing since 2014 and accelerated following the COVID-19 pandemic. Professionals such as psychologists and doctors are increasingly incorporating unproven methods, such as Reiki and Family Constellations, into their practices.

Medical and psychological professional bodies are expressing deep concern over this phenomenon. The Official Medical College of the Balearic Islands (COMIB) emphasizes that the limit of medical practice is defined by scientific evidence. While the college can investigate members and potentially revoke their licenses or report cases to the courts if public health is at risk, they face challenges in enforcement.

Similarly, the Official College of Psychologists of the Balearic Islands (COPIB) has noted the difficulty in pursuing these frauds due to a lack of a specific regulatory framework that prohibits these methods. This regulatory gap makes it difficult for professional associations to act unless a formal complaint is filed by a patient.
