Balearic Islands sees surge in airline luggage complaints
Consumer complaints regarding airline luggage have seen a significant increase in the Balearic Islands. According to the Direcció General de Consum, luggage-related issues accounted for 52 percent of all complaints filed through August, totaling 130 out of 250 cases.
Specific categories of complaints show notable rises. Reports of damaged luggage have reached 50 this year, surpassing the 37 reported in the previous year. Additionally, complaints regarding delayed luggage delivery have reached 22, exceeding the 20 recorded throughout 2025.
Separately, airport experts warn that common passenger habits can inadvertently cause baggage issues. Baggage handlers note that attaching colorful ribbons, cords, or large identification tags to suitcases can interfere with automated scanning systems. If a scanner cannot read the primary identification tag due to an obstruction, the bag may require manual processing, which increases the risk of the luggage failing to make its scheduled flight.
