Balearic Islands stakeholders clash over tourism and traffic measures
Stakeholders in the Balearic Islands are debating different approaches to managing the impacts of tourism and congestion. The platform ‘Menys turisme, més vida’ is advocating for a reduction in tourism numbers to combat massification. Their proposals include limiting tourist accommodation, protecting rural land, prioritizing residential water use over hotels and golf courses, and increasing sustainable tourism taxes.
In contrast, the Balearic Vehicle Rental Association (Baleval) is opposing legislative proposals that would limit the circulation of rental cars in Mallorca. Baleval argues that rental car restrictions will not solve traffic congestion, which they attribute to population growth, residential dispersion, and inadequate public transport. The organization has submitted 22 amendments to the Parliament, calling for data-driven solutions such as improved public transit and better parking management rather than island-wide restrictions.
