Balearic leaders demand accountability over migration alert

Political leaders in the Balearic Islands are demanding accountability from the Spanish central government following revelations regarding migration risks. The controversy stems from President Pedro Sánchez’s admission in Congress that National Police reports had warned of a ‘high risk’ scenario involving mass arrivals of migrants via sea to the peninsula and the Balearic Islands.

Marga Prohens, President of the Balearic Islands, has questioned why this information was not communicated to the regional government, noting that during a meeting in July, Sánchez had suggested migration flows were improving. Prohens argues that the regional government has a right to know about security alerts to ensure proper institutional coordination and preparation.

In Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, President of the Consell de Mallorca, has expressed indignation and called for the immediate resignation of the Government Delegate in the Balearic Islands, Alfonso Rodríguez. Galmés accused the delegate of withholding information and leaving the residents of Mallorca feeling unprotected and insecure. This tension follows recent incidents, including the interception of 75 people arriving irregularly on four boats in Mallorca and Formentera.
