Balearic transport federation warns of 8% fuel surcharge hike

The Balearic Business Federation of Transport (FEBT) has warned that an average 8% increase in fuel surcharges applied this October by major shipping companies will raise the cost of goods arriving in the Balearic Islands.

The increase affects maritime connections between mainland Spain and the archipelago operated by Baleària, GNV, and Trasmed. The hike applies to the Bunker Adjustment Factor (BAF), a variable surcharge based on international fuel price fluctuations.

FEBT President Ezequiel Horrach stated that transport companies lack the capacity to absorb these rising costs. He warned that the additional expenses will likely be passed down the logistics chain, ultimately impacting the final prices of daily consumer goods, including food and essential supplies, thereby affecting the purchasing power of local residents.
