Baleària and DFDS reorganize Strait of Gibraltar ferry market

The ferry market in the Strait of Gibraltar is undergoing a reorganization following strategic moves by Baleària and DFDS during 2025 and 2026. Baleària’s acquisition of the Tarifa-Tangier Ville line and its operations regarding Armas Trasmediterránea assets have significantly altered the service landscape between Spain and North Africa.

Baleària reported strong financial growth for 2025, with revenues reaching 801 million euros, a 16% increase from the previous year. The company’s EBITDA rose by 29% to 170 million euros, and net profit increased from 25 million to 63 million euros.

During this period, the company transported 6.5 million passengers, representing a 15% increase compared to 2024. International services played a major role in this growth, with passenger numbers in these sectors rising by 68% to nearly two million, driven primarily by activity in Morocco and Algeria. Morocco accounted for approximately 29% of the company's freight volume, while the Balearic Islands remained its primary cargo market at 59%.
