Bali court sentences two Thai nationals to prison for hashish smuggling

The Denpasar District Court in Bali has sentenced two Thai nationals, Mayuree Prasomtong (39) and Nontiya Janpech (23), to seven years in prison for smuggling hashish from Thailand to Bali.

The defendants were found guilty of conspiring to possess Class I narcotics and for personal drug abuse. The smuggled quantity was recorded at 308.25 grams. In addition to the prison terms, the court imposed a fine of Rp100 million each, with a substitute sentence of 60 days in prison if the fine is not paid.

The seven-year sentence is one year shorter than the eight-year term requested by the Badung District Attorney's Office. In the ruling, the panel of judges, led by Kusuma Wardhani, noted that the actions of the defendants were detrimental to Indonesia's legal image and posed a danger to the nation's youth.
