Bali designates five tourist areas as low‑emission zones

Governor Wayan Koster announced that five key tourism districts in Bali – Nusa Dua and Kuta in Badung, Ubud in Gianyar, Sanur in Denpasar and the Nusa Penida islands in Klungkung – will become low‑emission zones. The plan is built on five pillars: Green Energy with rooftop solar power for hotels, restaurants, villas and offices; Green Mobility using battery‑electric vehicles; Green Ecosystem through increased forest cover; Green Tourism by cutting single‑use plastics; and Green Community encouraging local participation.

Koster highlighted the need for energy self‑sufficiency as Bali’s electricity demand has already exceeded 1,200 MW and is projected to reach 1,400 MW by 2027. He warned that reliance on under‑sea cables could cause power cuts, so the solar‑PV rollout and electric‑vehicle adoption are seen as essential to protect the island’s tourism competitiveness and avoid load‑shedding.
