Bali Governor Wayan Koster addresses Denpasar fire displacement and viral video
Bali Governor Wayan Koster has instructed local government officials to ensure humanitarian treatment for residents displaced by a recent fire in Denpasar. The fire destroyed dozens of makeshift dwellings on approximately 4 hectares of land in the Nakula area of Pemecutan Klod. Koster clarified that the land is an official local government asset rather than private property and emphasized that any relocation of residents must be handled humanely, with relocation sites prepared before forced moves occur.
Separately, Koster addressed a resurfaced video showing him telling a citizen ‘diam kamu’ (be quiet) during a previous enforcement action at Pantai Bingin in Badung. He explained the remark was made while he was leading the demolition of villas, restaurants, and bars that violated coastal regulations. Koster stated the comment occurred when a resident interrupted the enforcement process to question the impact on workers, noting he was focused on the immediate task of upholding regulations.
