Bali hotel market faces oversupply and slowing tourism demand
Bali’s hotel and tourism industry is facing increasing complexity due to an oversupply of rooms and sluggish demand. While official data from Bank Indonesia shows the provincial economy grew by 5.58 percent in the first quarter of 2026, market indicators suggest significant economic uncertainty.
Research by PT Hotel Investment Advisory (HIA) indicates that the market is becoming highly fragmented. Rising Average Daily Rates (ADR) are currently masking a contraction in occupancy levels and weak real demand for room nights. This imbalance is driven by a surge in capital supply and bank lending; credit to the accommodation and food & beverage sector grew by 15.86 percent, while construction sector lending rose by 11.08 percent.
Furthermore, the influx of foreign tourists has slowed significantly. In the first quarter of 2026, foreign visitor growth was only 1.04 percent year-on-year, a sharp decline from the 7.95 percent growth seen in the same period in 2025. Projections suggest total foreign arrivals through the end of 2026 may remain stagnant or slightly decrease by 0.2 percent compared to 2025.
