Bali officials evaluate mass transit options including ART and subways
The Bali provincial government and the Badung Regency administration are evaluating multiple mass transit options to alleviate traffic congestion in southern Bali, particularly in tourist areas. Governor Wayan Koster has indicated a preference for Autonomous Rail Transit (ART), or integrated autonomous trams, over the previously discussed Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) due to higher cost efficiency and technical ease. The provincial government is currently drafting a Governor's Regulation (Pergub) to provide a legal framework for ART, as the technology is not yet included in the province's Spatial Plan (RTRW). Construction for the ART is targeted to begin in 2027.
In parallel, officials are studying several other alternatives, including subway systems, trams, and water taxis as aquatic alternatives. Following coordination meetings with the Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, and PT KAI, officials are reviewing the feasibility of a subway in the Kuta area and other mass transportation schemes to determine the most ideal solution for the region.
