Bali overtakes Japan in Australian travel searches
New Google Trends data reveals a shift in Australian travel interests, with Bali overtaking Japan as the most-searched destination for two consecutive months in July and August 2026.
Between January 2025 and August 2026, search interest for Japan saw a massive surge, peaking with an index score of 100 in January 2026. This was driven by a weak Japanese Yen and a strong Australian dollar. However, interest declined significantly toward the middle of 2026, dropping to an index score of 39 by August.
In contrast, Bali maintained more consistent search levels. While Japan remains stronger overall in 2026 with an average index score of 72.4 (a 77 percent increase), Bali's average rose to 48.9, representing a 45 percent increase.
