Bali hit by two major fires in Seminyak and Legian
Two major fires have struck the Bali tourism hubs of Seminyak and Legian within a 24-hour period.
On Sunday evening, August 30, a massive fire destroyed the long-standing beachfront restaurant Chez Gado Gado in Seminyak. The blaze reportedly began during a birthday celebration when a helium or hydrogen balloon burst near a candle, igniting the restaurant’s highly combustible thatched roof. Hundreds of diners and staff fled the building as flames spread rapidly. While no fatalities were reported, one child sustained minor burns, and material losses are estimated at approximately Rp4 billion.
Less than 24 hours later, a second significant fire broke out at a rubbish yard on Sunset Road in Legian. The blaze, which began late Monday night, sent plumes of smoke across the Seminyak and Legian areas. Local community groups report that approximately 200 residents have been affected by the rubbish fire, with many families losing their belongings. Emergency services worked through Tuesday morning to contain the smouldering site.
