Bali tourism generates Rp 176 trillion in annual foreign exchange

Bali's tourism industry generated approximately Rp 176 trillion in foreign exchange in 2025, accounting for roughly 55% of Indonesia's total tourism-related foreign exchange earnings. Governor Wayan Koster reported that of the more than 15 million foreign tourists who visited Indonesia during that period, approximately 49% chose Bali as their destination.

The tourism sector is a vital pillar of the local economy, representing about 66% of Bali's economic structure. To ensure long-term stability, the provincial government is focusing on sustainable development through policies such as waste management, restrictions on single-use plastics, and the promotion of clean energy.

Beyond economic impact, the region remains a major hub for cultural and spiritual tourism. Visitors often seek spiritual experiences through traditional Melukat water purification ceremonies at sites like Tirta Empul Temple or by undertaking physically demanding pilgrimages, such as trekking to the summit of the sacred Mount Agung volcano.
