Bali urged to lead national waste sorting movement
Sultan Baktiar Najamudin, Chairman of the Regional Representative Council (DPD RI), has called for Bali to lead a national waste sorting movement. He emphasized that Bali’s social capital, including traditional villages (desa adat), banjars, and local customs (awig-awig and pararem), provides a strong foundation for community-based waste management.
Najamudin argued that Indonesia must move away from the old “collect, transport, dump” paradigm to achieve a green economy and the goals of Indonesia Emas 2045. He suggested that with proper systems, waste can be transformed into value, energy, and employment. He also highlighted the need for an integrated approach to waste in archipelagic nations, noting that land-based waste often impacts coastal and marine environments.
