Bali's Canggu undergoes rapid transformation due to digital nomad boom
The coastal town of Canggu on the southwest coast of Bali has transformed from a traditional fishing village into a major global hub for digital nomads. This rapid development, driven largely by long-term visitors from Europe, Russia, and Australia, has led to a significant construction boom.
Local residents express growing discontent as traditional landscapes and rice fields are replaced by concrete buildings, coworking spaces, gyms, and cafes. The shift has brought challenges including traffic congestion, noise pollution, and increased waste. To address issues regarding visitor behavior, such as respect for temples and helmet requirements, Governor Wayan Koster released an official code of conduct for international guests in 2023.
