Balkan bakeries expand popularity across Germany

Balkan pastries, including burek, kifli, and baklava, are experiencing growing popularity across Germany. New Balkan-style bakeries are opening frequently, even outside of major metropolitan areas, attracting a diverse customer base.

In Ravensburg, Imrane Baftiu opened ‘Balkan Bakery’ in July, aiming to blend Balkan traditions with German dietary habits. This follows the migration history of her parents, who arrived from Kosovo as guest workers. Her business offers a mix of traditional specialties like kebapčinja alongside integral products and German pastries.

Frank Sauter, director of the bakers' association in Baden-Württemberg, notes a rising number of bakeries offering Balkan products, though they are not tracked as a separate statistical category. Cultural experts suggest this trend is driven by changing dietary habits, as consumers increasingly seek quick, convenient food options over large traditional meals.

Additionally, the rise of these bakeries coincides with the closure of some traditional German bakeries due to high costs and labor shortages, which has freed up commercial spaces for new entrepreneurs.
