Balkan bakeries expand across German city centers

Balkan-style bakeries are increasingly appearing in German city centers, offering traditional specialties such as Burek, Baklava, and Krempita. This trend is filling gaps left by structural changes in the traditional German bakery industry.

Frank Sautter, managing director of the Bakery Guild of Baden-Württemberg, has noted a growing number of these establishments. While exact nationwide statistics are unavailable, the segment is expanding beyond major cities into various urban areas.

Cultural scientist Gunther Hirschfelder suggests the rise is driven by changing eating habits, as consumers increasingly seek smaller snacks that function as a hybrid between a bakery item and a quick meal. Many of these businesses are founded by individuals with Balkan roots, bringing their culinary heritage to the German market.
