Balkan politicians leverage social media to reach voters
Politicians in the Balkan region are increasingly utilizing social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook to reach voters through influencer-style content, humor, and glimpses into their private lives. Sociologist Vladimir Vasić notes that these viral strategies are often calculated rather than spontaneous, as traditional political programs and statistics struggle to capture attention compared to informal digital content.
Political scientist Dženita Hasečić highlighted the growing alienation of the youth, noting that many young people choose to emigrate due to the perceived connection between political power and extreme economic inequality. She cited a significant disparity between the highest salary paid in the previous year, totaling 615,000 KM, and the average salary in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which is approximately 1,600 KM. This economic gap contributes to a sense of disillusionment among the younger generation.
