Balkan tourism sees high visitor numbers despite economic challenges

Albania has seen a significant rise in cultural tourism, with over 1.06 million domestic and foreign visitors recorded at cultural sites between January and August 2026. Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport Blendi Gonxhja reported a 65% increase compared to 2023. Leading attractions include Gjirokastër Castle with 223,280 visitors and Butrint National Park with 204,867 visitors. Other notable sites include the Shkodër Archaeological Park and the Skanderbeg Museum in Krujë.

In North Macedonia, tourism numbers remain high, with over 518,000 tourists visiting in the first six months of the year. However, local businesses in areas like the Skopje Old Bazaar report mixed results. While visitor numbers are substantial, merchants note that sales and profit margins have decreased compared to previous years, citing global economic pressures and reduced spending by key demographics such as tourists from Turkey and Italy.
