Balkans rank as third-lowest electricity price region in Europe

The Balkans have emerged as the region with the third-lowest electricity prices in Europe, trailing only the Iberian Peninsula and Scandinavian countries, according to a study by the Institute of Energy for Southeast Europe (IENE).

In Bulgaria and Greece, electricity prices range between 185 and 193 EUR/MWh, which is significantly lower than the 225 to 270 EUR/MWh seen in much of Central Europe. This trend is driven by Greece’s increasing production from wind and solar power, and Bulgaria’s combination of high solar potential with the rapid development of energy storage systems.

The report suggests that Southeast Europe has the potential to become one of the continent’s most sustainable and low-cost energy regions. Achieving this would require further investment in batteries, faster wind energy development in Bulgaria, expanded renewable sources and storage in the Western Balkans, and deeper regional integration of energy markets.
