Balkans waste sites spark health alerts in Bosnia and Montenegro

In Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina, federal representative Suada Halilović demanded an urgent inspection of a waste dump at the former Vrapčići swimming‑complex site, warning that the handling of waste may breach environmental and water‑protection regulations and threaten public health.

In the Montenegrin town of Zeta, residents were again covered by a cloud of red dust from the privately owned Red Mud pond. Local officials said they await toxicology results before deciding on expropriation or negotiations with the landowner, while the government estimates remediation could cost up to €10 million. Both incidents have prompted calls for immediate protective measures and transparent investigations.

Authorities in both countries have promised further action, but concrete steps and funding remain under discussion.
