Balıkesir explores new identity through Ida Madra Geopark
The Ida Madra Geopark is being positioned as more than just a protected natural area, serving as a potential model for regional development in Balıkesir. The geopark encompasses a diverse geography, including the foothills of the Kaz Mountains, the Madra Mountains, the coasts of Ayvalık, and the granite formations of Kozak.
Rather than focusing solely on conservation, the initiative aims to integrate geological heritage with local livelihoods, education, architecture, and culture, following successful models within the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network. This approach seeks to unify the diverse identities of Balıkesir—which spans the Aegean and Marmara seas—into a cohesive regional narrative.
