Ballarat man receives community support after Melbourne pub assault

Darren Rout, a 64-year-old man from Ballarat who is legally blind, has received significant community support following an assault at the Orrong Hotel in Armadale, Melbourne. The incident occurred in late July when Mr. Rout was allegedly struck in the head after asking an individual to move from a seat occupied by his friend.

The attack resulted in the dislodgement of Mr. Rout's prosthetic eye and damage to his specialized aphakic glasses, which require expensive custom lenses from Sweden. Due to injury and sensitivity, he faces a 12-month wait for a replacement eye. To assist with medical costs and the replacement of his eyewear, which is estimated to cost several thousand dollars, friends and the Orrong Hotel have launched GoFundMe campaigns.
