Melbourne CBD stabbing: Accused appears in court

Jerry Sowood, 27, has appeared in court facing multiple charges following a violent attack in Melbourne’s CBD. The incident occurred near the Victoria Police headquarters on Spencer Street, where Sowood allegedly punched a 10-year-old boy in the head.

Cherie Holt, the boy’s mother, intervened to protect her son and was allegedly stabbed with scissors. Ms. Holt sustained four stab wounds, ligament damage to her neck and shoulder, an arm injury, and a fractured leg. She is currently recovering in the hospital.

The family, who traveled from Phillip Island, was in the city to facilitate MRI scans for the boy, who is battling an inoperable brain tumor. While the attack caused significant distress, medical scans reportedly showed no additional inflammation or swelling in the child's brain following the assault.

Sowood has been charged with affray, intentionally causing injury, unlawful assault, and conduct endangering life and serious injury. During his court appearance, he declined legal assistance and addressed the court directly, stating he was in a “mental state of mind” when the attack occurred. He has made no application for bail.
