Ballarat population could exceed 213,000 by 2050

A report from the Regional Australia Institute suggests that Ballarat could see its population grow to over 213,000 by 2050, potentially making it Australia’s 11th largest regional hub. Under a full-scale national expansion strategy, resident numbers could reach as high as 263,657.

Regional leaders have cautioned that such explosive growth requires significant support from state and federal governments. Necessary measures include urgent infrastructure funding, local business incentives, and expanded housing delivery to ensure the city remains livable. Michael Poulton, chief executive of the Committee for Ballarat, emphasized that growth must be accompanied by dedicated community support systems to help new families settle long-term.
