Ballet companies present diverse interpretations of Romeo and Juliet

Recent productions of Romeo and Juliet by The Australian Ballet and Scottish Ballet offer distinct interpretations of the classic Shakespearean tragedy through dance.

The Australian Ballet’s production, staged at the Lyric Theatre in Brisbane, utilizes Sergei Prokofiev’s score to drive the emotional narrative. The performance features Grace Carroll as Juliet and Davi Ramos as Romeo, noted for their youthful chemistry and strong partnership. The production is characterized by its use of sophisticated leitmotifs and lavish costume design.

In contrast, Scottish Ballet presents a bold and unsettling version directed by Christopher Hampson and Oscar Sansom. This production is a compressed, 70-minute impressionistic take on the story that omits the traditional balcony scene and modifies the ending. It features a more feverish, athletic, and sensual tone, with Ishan Mahabir-Stokes and Kayla-Maree Tarantolo performing the lead roles.
