Ballon d'Or criteria shift focus to individual performance

The criteria for selecting the Ballon d'Or have been clarified by France Football, emphasizing individual achievement over collective trophies. The voting hierarchy prioritizes individual performance and decisive character, followed by collective achievements and trophies, and finally, value and fair play. Notably, career-long achievements are no longer considered, and the evaluation period has shifted from a calendar year to the previous season, spanning from August 2025 to July 2026, which includes the 2026 World Cup.

Amidst these rule changes, midfielder Fabian Ruiz has expressed his ambition to win the prestigious individual award. Ruiz, who has been a key player for both club and country, stated that winning the trophy would be a special honor and a realization of a footballer's dream. He noted that while he has won many team trophies, individual recognition remains a primary goal.

Rodri, the 2024 winner, remains a significant figure under the new guidelines. The official list of 30 candidates for the upcoming award is expected to be announced on September 8.
