Ballot measures regarding conservation and hunting rights face votes in Massachusetts and Colorado
Voters in Massachusetts and Colorado will soon decide on ballot initiatives related to environmental and wildlife management.
In Massachusetts, Question 6, known as the “Protect Water and Nature” initiative, proposes directing a portion of sales tax revenue from recreation and sporting goods toward natural conservation. Supporters, including Mass Audubon and The Trustees of Reservations, argue the measure could provide up to $100 million for land protection, clean water, and farm preservation. Opponents, including the Massachusetts Fiscal Alliance and state Republicans, contend that earmarking these funds limits legislative flexibility during budget constraints.
In Colorado, Amendment 83 seeks to add a constitutional right to hunt and fish certain wildlife, establishing these activities as the “preferred means” of wildlife management. Proponents argue the amendment is necessary to protect traditional methods from emerging threats. Opponents suggest that placing recreational activities in the constitution could trigger litigation and restrict the state’s ability to implement ethical changes to wildlife management. As of mid-October, proponents have significantly outspent opponents, raising over $2.61 million.
