Balmoral Castle was Queen Elizabeth II’s favorite retreat

Balmoral Castle in Scotland was the private residence the British royal family regarded as Queen Elizabeth II’s favourite place. From childhood she spent many summers there, enjoying picnics, horseback rides, hunting and the 20,000‑hectare estate’s gardens, forests, moorland and river. The castle also hosted parts of her honeymoon with Prince Philip and later many family gatherings with her children, grandchildren and great‑grandchildren. After her death, King Charles described Balmoral as “the place she loved most”, and Princess Eugenie said her grandmother was “happiest” there. The estate, held in private family ownership rather than Crown Estate, remains a regular summer destination for the royal family.
