Balneário Camboriú expands climate shelters, launches major urban projects

The municipality of Balneário Camboriú is tripling the capacity of its temporary emergency shelters in preparation for extreme weather linked to the El Niño phenomenon. Using about R$ 1 million of municipal funds, the city will increase its ability to host up to 300 families – roughly 800 to 900 people – across six sites, adding new locations, adapted bathrooms, mattresses, blankets and food kits that can sustain occupants for up to 60 hours. The upgrades are scheduled for completion by the end of August and form part of a broader municipal decree on climate‑risk management.

At the same time, the city is rolling out a R$ 53 million urban development plan tied to a new Plano Diretor. The plan includes the renovation of Praia Central with a doubled tree canopy, new leisure areas, dog parks and micro‑mobility lanes, as well as a large‑scale macro‑drainage system on the north side of the beach. More than 5,000 concrete drainage units have been installed, with over 70% of the work finished, aiming to protect the sand strip and promenade from flooding during heavy rains.
