São José do Rio Preto judge suspends R$ 29M road project

A judge in São José do Rio Preto has ordered the immediate suspension of a R$ 29 million public bidding process intended for the revitalization and flood prevention of Avenida Murchid Homsi.

Judge Marcelo Haggi Andreotti issued the injunction following a popular action citing significant environmental risks. The project involves the suppression of 943 trees, a figure that reportedly differs from earlier documentation. The court noted a lack of prior environmental licenses from state agencies, such as Cetesb and DAEE, specifically regarding interventions in a Permanent Preservation Area (APP) near the Córrego Aterrado.

Local residents and environmentalists have expressed concern regarding the impact on the local microclimate. The municipal government has been notified and has 20 business days to present a defense. The Public Ministry is also monitoring the case.
