Balneário Camboriú reports 89% drop in adolescent pregnancy
Balneário Camboriú has recorded an 89% reduction in adolescent pregnancies over the last 12 years. According to data from DATASUS and IDS Saúde, the number of pregnant individuals under the age of 18 dropped from 168 in 2014 to 18 in 2026.
Health officials attribute this decline to increased access to long-acting reversible contraceptives, specifically the subdermal implant Implanon and Intrauterine Devices (IUD). In 2025, the municipality performed 980 insertions of these methods. By September 2026, a total of 1,826 insertions had been recorded, with 1,160 of those occurring during specialized Saturday health drives.
Health Secretary Aline Leal noted that comparing 2024 to 2025—a period when the availability of IUDs and Implanon was expanded through these drives—showed a nearly 58% drop in underage pregnancies. While the Brazilian Ministry of Health began offering Implanon through the Unified Health System (SUS) for women aged 18 to 49 in 2025, Balneário Camboriú had been providing the method through its municipal network since 2023, eventually expanding the eligible age group for the implant to include those up to 18 years old in August 2025.
