Balos Lagoon faces overcrowding crisis on Crete

Viral videos showing extreme overcrowding at Balos Lagoon on the island of Crete have sparked intense debate regarding overtourism and the influence of social media. The footage, which has garnered nearly a million views on platforms like Instagram and TikTok, depicts hundreds of tourists crowded onto narrow metal piers and walkways, creating significant bottlenecks during boat arrivals and departures.

While the lagoon is a protected part of the Natura 2000 network known for its biodiversity, visitors have described the August peak season conditions as “an hell on earth.” Critics argue that social media platforms have turned once-secluded natural wonders into commercialized “likes traps,” while some locals suggest the footage focuses on the narrow landing area rather than the entire beach.

In response to the congestion, local authorities in Kissamos are considering stricter regulations. Proposed measures include an online reservation system to limit the number of simultaneous visitors to approximately 1,200, with strictly defined three-hour time blocks to manage the flow of people and protect the environment.
