Balrog Gets Voice in Season 3 of Amazon’s The Rings of Power
Amazon MGM Studios announced at a San Diego Comic‑Con panel that the Balrog will speak in Season 3 of its series The Rings of Power. English actor and comedian Simon Pegg has been cast to provide the creature’s voice. Showrunners Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne said the Balrog will not only speak but also have a dialogue with Sauron, portraying the demon as an intelligent, strategic opponent rather than a mindless beast. A behind‑the‑scenes “Creatures of Season 3” video released on July 27 showed the Balrog facing Sauron, who is using Morgoth’s crown to block its fiery attack. Season 3 is slated for release on 11 November 2026.
The casting has generated buzz among fans, as the Balrog has traditionally been silent in both Tolkien’s books and Peter Jackson’s films. The creators argue that, because both the Balrog and Sauron are Maiar, a conversation between them fits the lore while offering a new narrative angle for the series.
