Baltazar Castellano Melo opens Afromexican art exhibition

Artist Baltazar Castellano Melo has opened the exhibition ‘Tonos y sombras’ at the National Museum of Anthropology. The showcase features 46 works, including paintings and masks, that explore the cultural memory, spirituality, and traditions of the Afromexican communities in the Costa Chica region of Guerrero.

The exhibition utilizes materials such as wood, metal, earth, and charcoal to address themes of identity, territory, and resistance. The concept of ‘tones’ refers to spiritual forces or mystical animal doubles, while ‘shadows’ represent the devils found in the region's traditional imagery. The exhibition is free to the public and will remain open until November 8, 2026.
